John C. Calhoun of South Carolina (1782-1850) was vice-president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He is perhaps best known for his defense of "Nullification," a state's right to nullify unconstitutional laws. He was a great defender of "State Rights." Calhoun's most important writings are now available as complete, unabridged texts in this single volume. These writings address such issues as states' rights, nullification, slavery, the growth of the Federal judicial power and Calhoun's doctrine of the "concurrent majority."
