In this work Jonathan Edwards spoke out in defense against the critics of the revival in New England in 1742. He considered the events of that time "the glorious work of God." His aim in this book was to defend the unprecedented period of revival against the unjust words of its critics and the overzealous excesses of the revival's friends. Various questions regarding revival are discussed, such as: What is a revival? How is it to be recognised? Is it a genuine work of the Spirit of God? How is revival to be guarded against the errors of its over-zealous promoters?
